Full line-up announcement for Big Session 2010

We are pleased to announce the final additions to the Big Session line-up for 2010 (see the full day-by-day listing below). Winner of the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk award for best album, Cara Dillon with her staggeringly beautiful voice and last year’s folk award winner Chris Wood, heralded as ‘the renaissance man of English folk’. Taking up the late night slot, beat masters Dreadzone are back in style to get us all a movin’ and a groovin’ as UK’s original dance pioneers.

A bit of nostalgia for those old enough to remember and for a bit of country twang, The Rockingbirds are appearing on Friday.  The Camden 5-piece re-formed in 2009 after 16 years apart, and are in fine form. After almost 25 years and a new album (ABCDEFG) the lovely Chumbawamba make a welcome return, and also, thrown into the mix, is former member of Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, Jackie Oates.  Having been named Best Newcomer at the BBC Folk Awards, Jackie’s solo career has gone from strength to strength, with her recent album Hyperbeans released to critical acclaim. The ex-drystone walling Yorkshireman Ian King and his band with their own brand of medieval dub.

Another newcomer to Big Session, Raghu Dixit is fast becoming a shining beacon on the burgeoning Indian independent music scene, he will be bringing a big splash of colour and his own unique style of folk music. Festival goers can also look forward to Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls from The Wonder Stuff doing an acoustic (guitar and violin) set, traditional Irish folk from banjo maestro Damien O’Kane, and husband and wife duo Megson, who after supporting the likes of Seth Lakeman and Show of Hands, have gone on to sell-out their own extensive tours.  You can also add to that a performance from Oysterband’s very own Ray ‘Chopper’ Cooper debuting his new album, a unique and visually compelling Ceilidh band Whapweasel, with the one and only Gordon Potts as caller, and something altogether different from Holy Bandits.

To continue the tradition of putting on some shining new talent, we’ve got the esteemed songstress from Wigan, Nancy Elizabeth, guitar master John Smith, washboard rockers Julian Gaskell and his Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, folk-stomping quintet Moulettes, young folk trio Tyde, quirky folk-pop from 6 day riot and new young talent Blair Dunlop. Phew, 2010 looks to have the foundations to be the most exciting Big Session yet.

As ever the festival will play host to an eclectic mix of emerging and established artists, not to mention a vast range of real ale!  This award-winning festival tries just that bit harder: right from its deeply green credentials with the most impressive recycling initiatives, through to the Kids Zone keeping younger festival goers entertained, to making sure everyone enjoys the music whatever the weather, with all sets being undercover on indoor and outdoor marquee stages.

Oysterband will of course be returning as festival hosts with various performances in different guises across the weekend.  They’ll be joined by Scottish twins The Proclaimers and one of the British folk scene’s best loved artists – Kate Rusby. Also confirmed are this year’s hotly tipped Oxford five-piece Stornoway, recently seen on ‘Later’ with Jools Holland.  Having played 6 performances across 4 stages at Glastonbury 2009 and being chosen to headline the ‘Introducing Stage’ at Radio 1’s Big Weekend last Spring, 2010 looks set to be their year.  They’ll be joined on the bill by Irish favourites Dervish, who after 20 years together continue to be one of the most respected world/roots music acts around today.

Of course Big Session also prides itself on the fantastic range of quality food and drink offering even more choice this year.  There will be several quality food outlets open throughout the whole weekend and there will be a huge range of real ales and ciders from local and regional breweries available to sample during the festival.

Early Bird tickets are priced at £62.50 for the whole weekend are available to buy now until Sunday 28th February, with family and children options also available.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.bigsessionfestival.com or from the De Montfort Hall Box Office on 0116 233 3111.  Remember, last year’s festival was a sell-out so be sure to get your tickets in advance.
