Press Release

Annie Nightingale
joins The Big Chill
line-up
Eastnor Castle Deer Park,
Herefordshire
4th – 7th August 2011
Annie Nightingale
Broadcasting legend Annie Nightingale will join The Big Chill in 2011 for a
DJ set that will epitomise her stance as one of the most dedicated
champions of underground and independent music.
Annie Nightingale MBE is the first lady of broadcasting with an impressive career spanning four decades at BBC
Radio 1. Paving the way for the likes of Janice Long to Mary Anne Hobbs to Annie Mac, multi-award-winning Annie
Nightingale is known as an energetic party animal and claims to be most proud of winning Muzik Magazine’s Caner
Of The Year, among other awards which include being the first female DJ to be inducted in the Radio Academy Hall
Of Fame.
In 2010 Annie entered the Guinness Book Of Records for ‘longest running female radio DJ show in the world’
whilst also picking up the Outstanding Contribution to Dance Music award from DJ Mag. The 2010 celebrations of
Annie’s career included an exhibition of Annie’s photos at the O2 and a complete takeover of Radio 1 featuring a 9
hour broadcast, highlighting Annie’s far reaching choices in music, with live guests ranging from Tinchy Stryder and
Professor Green to Sub Focus, Primal Scream, Kevin Shields and Paul Weller.
As relevant today as when she began her broadcasting career, The Big Chill is delighted to welcome Annie back this
year with ‘Annie Nightingale: Decades Show’. Join in the party celebrations with Annie as she closes the Revellers’
Stage on Sunday.
Now a fully fledged member of the Festival Republic family The Big Chill is poised to build further on the successes
of 2010, one of its most successful years to date. Last year saw an international line-up of some of the biggest selling
names in electronic, indie and pop music and 2011 sees another all-star cast taking to The Big Chill stages including

an exclusive UK festival appearance by Kanye West plus The Chemical Brothers and Rodrigo y Gabriela. The Big
Chill takes place from 4th to 7th of August 2011 at Eastnor Castle Deer Park in Ledbury, Herefordshire.

What the press said last year
“The Big Chill has kept its undoubted spirit”
**** The Guardian
“Oodles of space combined with serene countryside
make The Big Chill the perfect antidote to the queues
and general claustrophobia Glastonbury provides”
Daily Star
“The Big Chill remains a healingly relaxed, eclectic
festival”
**** The Independent
“It’s not just the endless selection of music available
that makes the chill special, or even the decoration
adoring the rolling Malvern hills – it’s the real sense of
limbo, you become fully immersed within a sense of
balance. It’s this good vibe and free thinking attitude
that continues to make The Big Chill one of the nicest
festivals I’ve been to, and long may it continue this
way.”
Clash
“Carving a tidy niche as the thinking man’s electronic
festival”
DJ Magazine
“The original – and still the best – boutique festival”
Company Magazine
“The Big Chill’s still got it’s magic”
Datatransmission
“The Big Chill has bloomed, blossomed and grown”
8/10 VirtualFestivals
“Today The Big Chill field is a nonstop jabbering of
ideas and emotions, an anarchic paradise closer to
art ideas, ideals and creativity than [Spencer]
Tunick’s final images come.’ Sunday Times

With the support of Festival Republic, the Kenyan Orphan Project is supporting
thousands of orphans and vulnerable children each year with health, nutrition and
education programmes in Kisumu, Kenya. Thanks to donations from Festival
Republic in this year alone, KOP has completed the building work for a rural primary
school in Alendu, western Kenya and installed two boreholes which will supply clean,
fresh water to communities in Alendu and Kunya. Festival Republic also sent a strong
and supportive team to join with KOP’s Making Tracks fundraiser: a sponsored bike
ride that saw 56 riders cycle across Kenya in support of KOP’s projects. Volunteers
from KOP will be hosting the information tent onsite so will be able to help with any
questions you may have. You can also find out more or see links to all of KOP’s
social media at http://www.KOPafrica.org

SolarAid is a small charity making a big difference in the fight against poverty and
climate change. Its approach is simple yet effective; harness the power of the sun
and create affordable clean energy for communities in need. Barely 2% of rural
Africans have access to the electricity grid, yet many areas of the continent receive
some of the highest levels of sunshine in the world. SolarAid works with remote and
disadvantaged communities across southern and eastern Africa, helping people to
tap into an abundant source of free, renewable energy – the sun! Through its work,
SolarAid is empowering individuals, increasing education, health and income levels
and helping to stimulate local economies by creating business opportunities.
