GLOUCESTER GUILDHALL PRESENTS : ATHLETE: THE HITS – STRIPPED BACK

ATHLETE: THE HITS – STRIPPED BACK

With four studio albums and 14 singles under their belt, Ivor Novello Award winners and undisputed indie giants Athlete return to Gloucester Guildhall as part of a unique unplugged tour.

Friends since the age of 14, Athlete shot to fame with their first single Westside, which broke them onto the wider music scene with strong support from Radio 1. They signed to Regal Recordings and released their debut album, Vehicles and Animals in April 2003, which earned them a Mercury Music Prize nomination and went on to sell over 250,000 copies. The band’s popularity rocketed with the release of single Wires, their highest charting single to date, in 2005, and consequently their second album, Tourist, flew off the shelves, entering the UK album chart at #1. A year later Wires secured the band an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song.

Athlete’s third album, Beyond The Neighbourhood, released in September 2007, was a departure from their previous releases with self-produced collection of low-key songs. Despite being met by mixed reviews from fans and critics the album still charted at #5. In 2009 the band parted company with Parlophone Records and signed instead to Fiction Records, swiftly releasing fourth album Black Swan. They also signed a deal with Original Signal Recordings to release Black Swan in America

Athlete’s songs have been used in numerous films and TV programmes, the most recent of which was Light The Way, taken from Black Swan, which was used in a recent Co-Op advert. The band are rumoured to be working on a fifth album as well as dabbling in various solo projects – this stripped back tour brings to the stage a side to Athlete you may not have seen before and should be a real treat for fans.
